When you take a lot of digital pictures, finding a particular picture can be very difficult. Typically, the raw files that come out of a digital camera have names like
IMG_2369.JPG
IMG_2370.JPG
IMG_2371.JPG
IMG_2372.JPG
These are meaningless file names created by the camera. Renaming the files to contain the date the picture was taken (as noted by the camera) can be handy. For example, if your pictures are stored on the C: drive of a Windows computer, it would allow quickly finding all the pictures you took on December 25, 2002 by searching for files named 20021225*.jpg.
So, instead of the above names, you have names like this:
20021225-0745-0300-D30.jpg
20021225-0745-0301-D30.jpg
20021225-0747-4500-D30.jpg
20021225-0801-2800-D30.jpg
